After the New Zealand wide trauma of the Canterbury earthquakes in September 2010 and February 2011, it is a good feeling to see Christchurch start its rebuild. Steel Pencil is involved in several projects. One particularly interesting one is the acclaimed “cardboard cathedral”, more properly known as the Transitional Cathedral.
Designed (pro bono) by famous Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, the new cathedral is a “temporary structure”, designed to last only ten years.
The cathedral is 25 m tall and will accommodate 700 people.
The building uses 58 Tonnes of steel and 98 cardboard tubes 600 mm in diameter.
“A 3D model of the cathedral provided by a construction modelling company, Steel Pencil, was vital to the resolution of many issues that developed in the course of the contract. Without that, we'd still be at foundation level. It was extremely beneficial to have them on board. It was mind-bending stuff” - MR STEPHEN LYNCH, PROJECT MANAGER for NAYLOR LOVE CONSTRUCTION
